2 PLOT The sequence of events in a story. It is generally built around a conflict.

3 EXPOSITION The structure of the plot begins with exposition. It sets the tone, establishes setting, introduces the characters, and gives the reader background information.

4 NARRATIVE HOOK Occurs in the beginning of a story and “hooks” the reader’s attention so that he or she will want to read on.

5 RISING ACTION Events in a story that move the plot along by adding complications or expanding the conflict. The events in the rising action of a story usually work to build suspense.

6 CLIMAX Also called the turning point, this is the moment when the reader’s interest and the emotional intensity of the story is at its peak. This usually occurs near the end of the story.

7 FALLING ACTION / RESOLUTION
Occurs after the climax. The conflict is usually resolved at this time, and any loose ends are tied up.

8 CONFLICT A struggle between two opposing forces.
The plot of the story usually revolves around this.

9 INTERNAL CONFLICT Occurs within a character.
It can be caused by feelings of guilt or shame, the struggle to make a difficult decision, etc.

10 EXTERNAL CONFLICT Involves a character pitted against an outside force: such as nature, a physical obstacle, or another character.

11 THEME The main idea of a work of literature.
It is a perception about life or human nature that a writer shares with a reader.
