Narrator The person or character who is telling the story
theme The subject or message being written about or discussed
Central idea The main point or purpose of a piece of writing, often stated in a thesis statement or topic sentence
Dialogue Refers to the talking that goes on between characters in a story
tone The author’s attitude or feeling about a piece of writing (serious, humorous, satiric)
mood The feeling(s) a reader gets from a story: happy, sad, peaceful
suspense The uncertainty or anxiety that a reader feels about what will happen next in a story, novel, or drama
foreshadowing The writer’s hints and clues about what is going to happen in the story
Irony A contrast between expectation and reality
Verbal irony Involves a contrast between what is said or written and what is really meant
Situational irony Occurs when what happens is very different from what we expected would happen
Dramatic Irony Occurs when the audience or the reader knows something a character does not know
Subplot A minor plot that relates in some way to the main story
Parallel episodes Repeated elements of the plot
