WHAT IS THIS?

Quickwrite Imagine you could turn a magnet on or off? What could you do with it?

Watch and Answer Questions Why does the magnet pick up the paper clips? Why does the magnet pick up the rivet? Why does the rivet pick up the paper clips? Now why doesn’t the rivet pick up the paper clips?

Think About Thursday When we held the magnet above the wire on Thursday, was the magnetic field strong? How did you know? Think for a moment. How could you make the magnetic field stronger? What have we done in class to make magnetic force stronger?

How does an electromagnet work? Focus Question How does an electromagnet work?

Instructions Wrap the thin wire 40 times around the rivet. Be sure to leave about 10 cm of wire free at the start end so you can attach it to a D-cell. Make sure all wraps are in the same direction. Keep the wraps between the head of the rivet and the first black washer. Put the rivet/wire system into a circuit, using one D-cell in a holder and a switch.

Instructions Part 2 When connecting wires to the D-cell, connect to the spring closest to the terminal for the best results. Always leave the switch open unless you are testing the rivet, or you might drain the D- Cells See if you can use the rivet as a magnet by testing it with paper clips

New Vocabulary Word Electromagnet – A magnet made using the flow of electricity through an insulated wire to produce a magnetic field
