1 Investigation 4: current attractions
ELECTROMAGNETS Investigation 4: current attractions

2 How can energy be transferred from one material to another?
Science Essential Question

3 What happens to a material when energy is transferred to it?
Science Essential Question

4 What is an Electromagnet?
You know what a magnet is- now think about what an electromagnet might be? Look at the first part of the word. What do you think that might mean? Turn and talk

5 Electromagnets can be turned off and on just like a light!
An electromagnet works with electricity. They are temporary magnets that only work when electricity flows through them. When the power is on, it is magnetized. When the power is off (the circuit is incomplete) it is not magnetized. Electromagnets can be turned off and on just like a light! Username: glenloch Password: brainpop

6 What's the difference between a regular magnet and an electromagnet?
The magnetic force in a magnet is always there.  The magnetic force field of an electromagnet can be turned off and on by using  a switch.  When electricity is turned on, the magnetic force is on.  When electricity is turned off, the magnetic force is turned off.

7 Time to Watch the Movie and Take the Quiz
Brain Pop Movie – Electromagnets Time to Watch the Movie and Take the Quiz

8 Why are Electromagnets useful?
Think about how an electromagnet can be “turned off and on” easily. How might that be useful? Turn and talk.

9 Electromagnets are Everywhere!
Every time you ring a door bell, use a microwave, blow dry your hair or listen to music through a speaker you are using an electromagnet.

10 More examples of electromagnets in use

11 How can electromagnets be used in a factory or junk yard?
Big Electromagnets! How can electromagnets be used in a factory or junk yard? Turn and Talk

12 Electromagnets Video Clip from Discovery Education
Let’s Try the Experiment Described in the Video

13 Electromagnets - Summary
An electromagnet is a magnet made by using electric current. Loops of wire are wrapped around a core made of magnetic material, such as iron When current passes through the wire, a magnetic field forms around the wire and the core. The more times you wrap the wire, the stronger the magnet will be.

14 Reflection Think about an everyday use of an electromagnet. How would life be different without it?

15 Exit Ticket Use words and a picture to explain what an electromagnet is. How is it different from a normal magnet? Why are electromagnets useful?
