1 Investigation: Electromagnets (CPO 15.2)
Purpose: To learn how electricity and magnetism are related Name: _________________________ Attach the coil, battery and switch in the circuit shown above. Leave the switch open so that no current flows. Place a magnet about 1 cm away from the coil. Stand the magnet up on its side. Close the switch and watch what happens to the magnet. NOW, OPEN THE SWITCH!!!! Otherwise, the coil will overheat. Repeat the steps listed in the Set-up Section of the table below/ Set-up Observation Coil connected to + of battery with red side of magnet towards the coil Coil connected to + of battery with white side of magnet towards the coil Coil connected to - of battery with red side of magnet towards the coil Coil connected to - of battery with white side of magnet towards the coil

2 Use the textbook or notes to answer #7 and #8.
Questions What happened when the switch was closed? _______________________________________ Why do you think the magnet moved? ________________________________________________ 3. When the magnet was reversed (red to white), did the force between the magnet and the coil change? Provide evidence from the lab to explain how the force changed. _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ 4. When the current reversed direction (- connected instead of +), did the force from the coil change direction? Provide evidence from the lab to explain how the force changed. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 5. How is a coil that carries current like a magnet? _________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ 6. How is a coil that carries current different than a magnet? _________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ Use the textbook or notes to answer #7 and #8. 7. Define the term “electromagnet.” ____________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 8. What are advantages of electromagnets over permanent magnets? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
