1 Magnetism & Electricity

2 Def: The relationship between electricity and magnetism
Electromagnetism Def: The relationship between electricity and magnetism An electric current will be produced in a wire that is exposed to a changing magnetic field

3 Electromagnetism Parts of an electromagnet Soft iron core
Wire wrapped in coils

4 Electromagnetic Induction
The current is induced (caused to flow) in a wire when it cuts across magnetic lines of force Can occur two ways: Move the iron core in and out of a coil of wire

5 Electromagnetism Attach coils to a voltage source and leave core inside coils

6 Electromagnetism A wire wound into a coil has a much stronger magnetic field than a straight wire Two ways to increase the strength: The more turns in the coil, the stronger the field The more current flowing through the wire, the stronger the field
