WORKING TOGETHER TO HELP YOUR CHILD FMS LITERACY NIGHT WORKING TOGETHER TO HELP YOUR CHILD

Behold: The power of reading

By the end of a school year... “Student A” will have read the equivalent of 60 whole school days. “Student B” will have read only 12 school days. Which student would you expect to have the better vocabulary? Which would you expect to be more successful?

vocabulary vocabulary speaking/writing understanding enhances intellectual, emotional, creative, and interactive expression & listening and reading comprehension speaking/writing vocabulary understanding

So, reading has some pretty powerful effects. But so does NOT reading.

DID YOU KNOW? “The link between academic failure and delinquency, violence, and crime is welded to reading failure.” (Department of Justice) ⅔ of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare. (National Assessment of Adult Literacy)

DID YOU KNOW? Literacy rates, dropout rates, and crime reveal connection between poor reading skills and unfavorable life outcomes. (Readingpartner.org)

DID YOU KNOW? Without intervention and extra work: 78% chance of not catching up (National Assessment of Adult Literacy)

AND, BELIEVE IT OR NOT Students who perform well in May can DROP 6 months to a year below their earlier performance if they don’t continue reading during the summer. (American Library Association)

But, we’re in luck! The easiest one: summer reading! low-cost options exist to fight the “Summer slide.” The easiest one: summer reading! if students read 8 books [20 articles] that match their reading ability and areas of interest over the summer, they can achieve growth similar to students who attended summer school.
