Global trends in academic library development Anna Maria Tammaro Tashkent, March 22nd, 2017 TAM “Academic Libraries to increase information support”

Change in University education New models for tertiary education How trends in technology, tuition costs, skills demand, demography and internationalisation etc, may drive changes in business models and delivery models.

Change in user behaviour Online users interact with library-related services Expansion of: range of digital assets (whether collection is for purchase, for subscription, or for free); range of services; user preference online everywhere (different devices) UX goes beyond simple usability studies. Librarians need to understand their users holistically and think of the life of library in the user as opposed to user in the library of the librarian.

Change in Library search Global search engine Whilst specialised tools are valued, the global search engines (and especially Google) are the benchmark. Discovery tools Unified search. Local collection search needs to be uni ed, not only across print and electronic, but also across curatorial silos (archives, museums, special collections, repositories, and research data stores).

Change in collection development and management Management issues for building the future academic library Digitalization Budget cutbacks, consortia Next generation library systems ==> standardization of data formats and workflows Linked Open Data: interoperability and integration of data (going beyond mere catalogue records) Long term preservation - hosting services like Portico and/or LOCKSS

Change in Library organization and policies New organizational models, to enable innovation, collaboration, and transitional changes Reorganization of the libraries Staff (re)education Shared Integrated Library System among academic libraries The impact of academic libraries to the university community and beyond Advocate the value and relevance of academic libraries in higher education Engaging and partnering with users to co-create Library services

Library should empower user Supporting student learning and success through embedding library services into the curriculum Enhancing collaborative information literacy programme among academic libraries Recognising out of classroom learning: how can information literacy classes interaction time be recognised in academic or co-curricular activities.

Open Science, Open access and research data Supporting research which encompasses a range of issues: linked data, research support skills, managing data, open data, open access, measuring impact. European open science cloud Open data: extended library roles and functions into developing data centric domain information infrastructure Open access transformation ==> article processing charges, offsetting models etc. vs subscription models Research support services, including Impact Factor analysis, emerging topic detection, competition & collaboration analysis ORCiD as the common researcher identifier

Research outputs Making research outputs available is a major mission for Uzbekistan research funders to benefit students and the public as well as researchers. What research content should your online services help them access?
