5 Library Goals and Initiatives 2013-2016 (DMI) I. Foster Scholarship, Discovery and Innovation a) Make library collections more accessible. i. Process backlogs in special collections and other areas. ii. Enhance accessibility and use of the Library's circulating print collections. iii. Make it easier to discover the Library's resources by improving the usability of online discovery systems. iv. Improve the robustness and reliability of web-based library resources and tools. b) Establish the Research Data Services program, and expand its outreach, acquisitions, scholarly support and data curation activities. c) Extend the reach and audience for international and area studies expertise and collections. i. Hire an International Reference Librarian ii. Continue successful programs that involve international scholars and librarians, including the Mortenson Center and the Summer Research Laboratory on Russia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia. iii. Promote the Library's role as a resource for the world's scholars.

Provide Transformative Learning Experiences a) Increase integration of subject specialist librarians into academic departments and programs across campus in order to promote use of information, instructional, and scholarly support services by students, staff, and faculty. i. Maintain, assess, and, where feasible, expand embedded librarian services in academic buildings and virtual environments, including online courses. b) Identify strategies for ascertaining emerging research and teaching emphases on the Urbana campus and use this information to establish collection development objectives. c) Adopt best practices from the fields of evidence-based librarianship and user experience in the design and development of library services. d) Adapt library spaces to better support transformative learning experiences. i. Remodel spaces within the Main Library for University Archives and humanities services. e) Assure accessiblity of library resources, including faculty and staff expertise, in location-independent ways. i. Continue the development of online services, such as virtual reference. ii. Continue the development of online tools, such as LibGuides and mobile apps.

Make a Significant and Visible Societal Impact a) Develop national and international partnerships that increase public access to library programs and resources. b) Expand efforts to digitize Library materials in the public domain and provide open access to them. c) Accelerate the creation of open educational and research resources. i. Expand the Library's repository role for published materials (IDEALS) and datasets (RDS). ii. Initiate an online publishing program for undergraduate research journals.

Steward Current Resources and Generate Additional Resources for Strategic Investment a) Establish a robust and sustainable program supporting access, dissemination, preservation, and curation of digital content created, managed, or acquired by the Library. b) Invest additional resources in Library collections serving areas of identified campus and Library strategic interest. c) Model best practices in collection management through application of guidelines for long-term storage of print materials informed by participation in local, state, regional, and national programs. i. Serve as the "last copy" repository for libraries in Illinois. ii. Participate in shared print repositories under development by consortial partners such as the CIC and the HathiTrust. d) Promote collaborative efforts toward accomplishing local, regional, and national goals for digital preservation programs. i. Participate in initiatives such as the DuraSpace Foundation, ArchivesSpace, and HathiTrust. e)Increase data-driven, evidence-based decision making throughout the Library to assure the wisest and most efficient use of resources.
