(quotation or paraphrase) Bellwork Tuesday 9/20/16 On a clean sheet of paper, make a chart like the one shown below. I suggest turning your paper sideways to provide more space for writing and waiting until you have filled in each row to draw the horizontal line underneath (until you know how much space you need). Evidence (quotation or paraphrase) How does this evidence illustrate the logic of Catt’s claim (logos), build Catt’s credibility (ethos), or impact the audience’s emotions (pathos)?

(quotation or paraphrase) Fill in the chart with examples of ethos, pathos, and/or logos from the text on the left. On the right, explain how Catt uses the rhetorical strategy to achieve her purpose. The top row is an example. The other rows are optional sentence starters. Find at least 2 pieces of evidence on your own. Evidence (quotation or paraphrase) How does this evidence illustrate the logic of Catt’s claim (logos), build Catt’s credibility (ethos), or impact the audience’s emotions (pathos)? “Eighty years after the Revolution, Abraham Lincoln welded those two maxims into a new one: ‘Ours is a government of the people, by the people, and for the people’” (paragraph 3). By citing experts, Catt is building her credibility. Throughout the first part of her speech, she showcases her deep knowledge of America’s history, additionally citing Woodrow Wilson and showing the progression of American ideals. Catt builds logos here by… Here, Catt builds credibility by… Here, Catt builds on her claim that… Catt makes a strong argument that… Catt makes a strong point that…
