5 Rhetorical Triangle Terms Message The message is what the author is trying to get the audience to understand. Style The style of the text focuses on syntax and diction. Style--How does the author convey his/her message effectively? Audience I ntended: who the author is directly addressing Unintended: readers or listeners that the author is not directly addressing.

6 Rhetorical Triangle Terms Purpose The purpose is NEVER to explain! The purpose is how the author wants the audience to move into action. ( Speaker The speaker is the author of the text or the person giving a speech. Tone The general attitude of the speaker as he/she presents the message and purpose.

7 Rhetorical Triangle Terms of Persuasion Ethos The speaker's appeal to credibility by using authoritative laws Pathos The speaker's appeal to the audience's emotions. Logos The Speaker's appeal to the audience's intelligence/logic by presenting rational ideas and arguments.

9 "On Being a Cripple" --Nancy Mairs  As we read the text, mark one use of ethos, four uses of pathos, and four uses of logos.  For each example marked write an annotation.  The annotation should: 1) Mark the text 2) label the piece of the rhetorical star 3) Explain the connection from text to term

10 Let's use the rhetorical star to compose rhetorical analysis paragraphs  Look at or think about "On Being a Cripple." How does the author use logos in her essay? With a partner and following the guide below, write a paragraph explaining her use of logos. This is how you could structure an effective paragraph: * The author’s effectively uses logos to convey her message. * Proof from the text * Explain how the quotes proves your argument and explain why it is effective. Paragraph : Remember that a paragraph is 5-7 sentences.

11 You do! 15 PP  Write a paragraph about Mairs's effective use of pathos. Remember to quote the text at least once, and use MLA format.
