5. Rhetorical Triangle Terms Message The message is what the author is trying to get the audience to understand. Style The style of the text focuses on syntax and diction. Style--How does the author convey his/her message effectively? Audience I ntended: who the author is directly addressing Unintended: readers or listeners that the author is not directly addressing.

6. Rhetorical Triangle Terms Purpose The purpose is NEVER to explain! The purpose is how the author wants the audience to move into action. ( Speaker The speaker is the author of the text or the person giving a speech. Tone The general attitude of the speaker as he/she presents the message and purpose.
