“Enlightened” Absolute Monarchs Maria Theresa Joseph II Frederick the Great Catherine the Great

War of Austrian Succession (1740 – 1748) Maria Theresa claimed the Austrian throne after Charles VI died. Seizing the moment - Frederick the Great, a Prussian military Genius invaded Silesia – a small territory in Austria. The major military powers in Europe created alliances. This conflict caused War on three Continents – Europe, India(Asia) and North America. It was resolved by the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle – which made everyone return their territories to their rightful owners except Silesia. Maria Theresa was upset and caused another war.

The Seven Years’ War (1756 – 1763) AKA – The French and Indian War Prussia ended up fighting this war on three fronts – VS. Austria, France and Russia. The British and French competed for the control of colonies in India and North America. The British won control of India. In North America, the French had gained the support of the Native Americans due to their partnership in trading (Fur, Timber and Fish) The British had more colonists and Naval power than the French.

The Seven Years’ War (1756 – 1763) AKA – The French and Indian War The Treaty of Paris – 1763 – The End of the Seven Years’ War The British were given control over India and all of the lands east of the Mississippi River. France gave up some of their land in Canada. Spain made an alliance with France and they lost control of Florida. The French gave Spain the Louisiana Territory in return. Austria had to accept the loss of Silesia to Prussia. END RESULT – Great Britain was now THE world power. They had the most colonists, resources and sea-power.
