Main Idea: Absolute Monarchs rule Austria and Germanic Prussia Why It Matters Now: Prussia had big military in Germany which helped set up World Wars Prussian Siege of Kolberg Russia during the Seven Years War

2 Lutheran vs. Catholic vs. Calvinism
The Thirty Years’ War Lutheran vs. Catholic vs. Calvinism 1608- Joined together under Protestant Union 1609- formed the Catholic League Spreading in Germany and gaining followers These three just waiting for a spark to start war Kaboom!

Ferdinand II – Holy Roman emperor Bohemia did not trust Catholic stranger Ferdy closed a few Protestant churches Sends in army to put down riots German princes (Protestant) decided to challenge Ferdy Leads to Thirty Years’ War ( )

First 12 years= Haps winning (Austrian/Spanish) Men allowed to plunder and rob Ger. villages Last 18 years= Haps losing (Sweden helps out) Gustavus Adolphus brought his army in (died in battle) Richelieu sent troops to help the Protestants against the Hapsburg

7 States Form in Central Europe
West=Good Central/East=Not So Good Serfs gained freedom, became middle class, taxed for armies Strong, powerful kings Serfs kept as serfs, no freedom No strong king allowed Weak empires, no armies, no money Things change…. Hapsburg take steps to become absolute monarchs! -Charles VI rules in 1711 Made a deal w/Europe so his daughter would rule next

Austria Prussia French Russia (1st time in Europe) Britain Attacked Saxony War fought in Europe, India, and North America -No change in Europe -France lost N. Amer. colonies -Britain got India by itself
