Presentation transcript:

Ways of Learning Irregular Verbs Here are some easy ways to learn English irregular verbs.

What are they? The way a verb forms its past tense determines its classification as Regular or Irregular. A Regular verb takes -d or –ed ending. Ex. Play- played , call-called. There are no rules that exist to form for Irregular verbs. For example: go-went-gone, eat-ate-eaten, take-took-taken; Read the following sentences: Present Tense Past Tense I run to school. I ran to school. I run in the morning I ran in the morning. I run five miles every day. I ran five miles yesterday.

Learn the pattern of irregular verbs 1.Verbs where all three forms are identical Bet-bet-bet Burst-burst cast-cast-cast Let-let-let cost- cut-cut hit-hit-hit Hurt-hurt-hurt Put-put-put quit-quit-quit set-set-set Shut-shut-shut Split-split-split Spread-spread-spread 2. Verbs with the same present and past participle Many verbs also have the same present and past participle. Example: come (present), came (past) and come (past participle) become (present), became (past) and become (past participle).

Learn the pattern of irregular verbs 3.Verbs where the long E changes to a short E Here’s a list of words to learn: Keep (present), kept (past), kept (past participle) Sleep (present), slept (past), slept (past participle) Feel (present), felt (past), felt (past participle) Bleed (present), bled (past), bled (past participle) Feed (present), fed (past), fed (past participle)   4.Verbs with definite sound patterns Some irregular verbs have a song-like feel when you practice them in various tenses. This is because the vowels change from I to A to U creating a nice pattern. Examples include: Begin (present), began (past), begun (past participle) Drink (present), drank (past), drunk (past participle) Ring (present), rang (past), rung (past participle) Shrink (present), shrank (past), shrunk (past participle) Sing (present), sang (past), sung (past participle) Swim (present), swam (past), swum (past participle
