What is the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick? 1. A Sacrament of the Catholic Church that is administered to a Christian 2. Who, having reached the age of reason, begins to be in danger due to illness or old age. 3. Except for those who ‘persevere obstinately in manifest grave sin.’

The sacrament is administered to give spiritual, and even physical strength during an illness, especially near the time of death. It is often one of the last sacraments someone will receive.

The Symbols of this Sacrament OIL Oil symbolizes healing from illness, cleansing from sin, and consecration to God.

The Symbols of the Sacrament The Sign of the Cross Reminds Catholics that their salvation comes through Jesus Christ, and that they are called to unite their sufferings to those of Jesus. Anointing on the Forehead Symbolizes the need to know Christ and to follow Him. Anointing on the Hands When sick people are anointed on the hands they are reminded that they must turn all of their activity over to Christ.

The Symbols of the Sacrament Laying on of Hands Comforts the sick person, but also symbolizes the power of God entering the sick person through the mediation of the Bishop or Priest.

The Recipient of the Anointing of the Sick The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not limited only to the dying, but also to: - Those who are ill - Those who are undergo a serious operation for the recovery of their health and spiritual strength

The Effects of the Anointing of the Sick According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1532), the special Grace of the Anointing of the Sick has as its effects: - The uniting of the sick person to the passion of Christ - The strengthening, peace and endurance, to persevere in a Christian manner, the suffering of illness and old age. - The forgiveness of sins - The restoration of health, if it is conductive to the salvation of the soul - The preparation of passing over to eternal life
