with the IPS! Migrant Directors Presentation 3/2018 Presented by Stacy Smith, KSDE slsmith@ksde.org and Kathleen Mercer, KSDE ktmercer@ksde.org Jay

What are the required components of the IPS? 2. What practical ways can we expect migrant staff to have input? 3. What is the parent input/involvement requirement and what are ways districts are addressing that? 4. What resources are available at KSDE's website for IPS? 5.  What type of access should parents have?  Just a written copy?

Kansas leads the world in the success of each student A NEW Vision for Kansas ... Kansas leads the world in the success of each student KANSAS STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION | www.ksde.org

Post Secondary Success

Starting with a class of 100 HS Freshmen In Kansas, ON AVERAGE……. 86 will graduate HS 69 will enroll in a 2-yr or 4-yr post-secondary institution 45 will complete 1 year of college (24 non-remedial credit hours) 34 will complete a post-secondary credential Average student loan debt for college Class of 2016 graduates nationwide = $37,172

Labor Market Demand

Big Ideas The labor market is rapidly becoming more sophisticated and expecting new employees to be ready day one There are multiple postsecondary paths that lead students to satisfying careers and the middle class. Authentic career exploration and postsecondary planning during K-12 school years are critical to a student’s future success.

Reflect on your Individual Plan of Study What would you have done differently? For example, were there different courses you would have taken?

Compelling Reasons for Individual Plans of Study Fosters a better answer to “Why am I taking this class?” More engaged students and families Career exploration done in “safe” mode Encourages research and planning of multiple postsecondary options (job, military, 2-year, 4-year) More students completing a post-secondary credential with labor market value in less time and with less student loan debt

What is an Individual Plan of Study (IPS)? An Individual Plan of Study (IPS) is both the actual product a student develops and a process the school implements to guide students in developing their unique IPS.

Product 1. A graduated series of strength finders & career interest inventories to help students identify preference toward career clusters 2. 8th – 12th grade scheduling process with course selections based on career interests 3. A general post-secondary plan (workforce, military, certification program, 2-yr. college, 4-yr. college) 4. Portable electronic portfolio

School Process 1. Counselor Centered (IPS curriculum implemented by counselor) 2. Career Advisor System (all school staff implement IPS curriculum) 3. Career Advocates (individuals hired to implement IPS curriculum) 4. Hybrid (any combination of models 1 – 3) Jay

IPS Process for the Student Identify Career Interests, abilities and preferences Set Goals and create/update postsecondary plan Explore/research post- secondary options Select Courses Career Exploration Develop portfolio: Resume, cover letter, employability skills documentation, assessment results, extra curricular involvement, leadership activities IPS Process for the Student Through professional learning experiences: Job Shadow, Internship, Career Fair, Mock Interviews, Workplace tour, etc.

IPS gives direction to career exploration

Reflect on the Individual Plan of Study In retrospect, what resources did you have to make your post secondary decisions?

Goals for IPS Implementation All students from middle grades through grade12 will have an IPS implemented by 2018-2019 school year. Implementation will include multiple reviews per year Implementation will include parent input Implementation will become part of the school culture

Every Step Along the Way is Crucial Employment Post-Secondary: Career Preparation 9-12: Career Preparation 6-8: Career Exploration K-5: Career Awareness Every Step Along the Way is Crucial

K-12 Approach To IPS: What are you doing now? Identify Where Career Development Objectives Are Addressed: Core teachers? CTE Teachers? Special Education Teachers? Etc. Activities might include: Student Led Conferences Interest Inventories Journal/ Reflections/ Lessons Exploration/ Preparation Activities Career Fairs Job Shadows Classroom Speakers

Reflect on the Individual Plan of Study How could an IPS help to identify academic and SECD needs of students?

Implementation Resources IPS Roadshow IPS Rubric District/Building Plan By Grade Level By Subject Professional Learning and Career Curriculum Plan

IPS Rubric

By Grade Level

Big Ideas Due to labor market trends and the state of our economy, students cannot afford to wait to explore areas of interest in college. IPS serves as a tool to guide the student and family through the maze of secondary and post-secondary options (AP, IB, Dual Credit, Technical School, Community College, Military, etc.) A quality IPS includes an interest inventory (revisited yearly), enrollment based on interests, a planning tool and an exportable electronic portfolio. Schools should introduce the IPS in the middle grades and continue building it through graduation. Every student (middle grades through grade12) in Kansas schools will have started an Individual Plan of Study by 2018-2019.

K-12 Career Education Continuum

Providing guidance for implementing Individual Plan of Study for special populations. Due to potential high student mobility…The student's IPS might reflect the State Course Codes (KCCMS)  this would allow the receiving school to cross walk the local course name with the State Course ID therefore assuring the student receives credit for prior course work When a student exits a school that the student be provided with a packet of their documents to “hand carry” to their next school.  Items to include in this packet: Copy of transcript(s)/grade reports.  Copy of IPS,  Copy of IEP,  Contact information of exiting school (counselor, registrar, etc).
