2 The State Board of Education goal for 2018-2019 school year
is for every student in grades 7-12 to have an IPS. For those districts who have adopted a curriculum with a Career Advising role for classroom teachers to assist counselors with this ambitious goal…. Help is on the way with a Career Advising Roadshow provided through regional service centers. For $25 per participant this impactful professional development will help you move the needle on student achievement.

4 Thinking about the IPS from the student perspective…
Thinking about the IPS from the student perspective…. There are different categories of attitudes and behaviors that overlap to create our unique aptitudes and skills. Often we talk with students about their current interests and don’t think about the activities that they have yet to experience as new and exciting learning adventures. This particular diagram is important to consider as we discuss with students a balance between their unique potential and how it can be an advantage to them in identifying opportunities.

5 This career advising wheel serves as a valuable organization tool for schools as they identify the various processes that can be developed for the student body and staff to facilitate the IPS tools, curriculum, and activities. It would be incredibly difficult and less than effective if the only conversations taking place with students were conducted by the school counselors. With the large case loads and unique needs of each student there simply is not enough time for frequent feedback and interaction. A Career Advising model has proven to be the most successful in providing rich conversations and experiences for students and families in determining courses, activities, and post secondary goals for each students Individual Plans of study. With a little structure and support the most capable of our families and students can full fill these activities with relative ease. It is important to not over support in these instances.
