PROMOTION & PROGRESSION: A PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE Bridget Lumb Professor of Systems Neuroscience Head of School, Physiology & Pharmacology 1978 – 1982: Research Assistant, PhD 1982 – 1990: Postdoctoral Researcher 1990 – 1997: Lecturer (UoB) (8 years PD) 1997 – 2004: Senior Lecturer (UoB) (15 years PD) : Reader (UoB) (22 years PD) : Professor (26 years PD)

How to address these issues? How do women and men compare in progression and promotion? How does UoB compare with other institutions? Why do some people (often women) progress their careers more slowly than their colleagues and/or do not attain senior positions in the sector? Lack of awareness/interest in the career structure Lack of confidence in own abilities Work-life balance/childcare responsibilities Lack of role models

PROGRESSION Evidence based exercise Clearly laid out criteria Transition to independence Fellowships HEFCE positions Forums for discussion Peer group SET mentoring SRD PI mentoring

PROMOTION Evidence based and peer reviewed exercise Requires forward planning to achieve the required academic profile - in particular external recognition
