2 Changes to the Promotions Exercise 2017
Word Counts Word counts have now been introduced for academic-related applications. Blind Review The Promotions Review Working Group has agreed that for the 2016/17 Promotions Exercise, a process of anonymised applications for promotions will be trialled to avoid unconscious gender bias. You should remove reference to your name in your application, completing the form using only your staff ID number. Avoid making reference to gender in your application form and CV. The Head of School/Section should also avoid referring to gender The anonymised copy will be made available to the relevant Role Analyst who will score the application and submit their scores.

What am I applying for? Promotion, Contribution, or both? Promotion is based on evidence of significant and permanent role changes, and increases in responsibility Contribution is where you have delivered exceptional service for a one off event or a sustained time period Remember that you are not automatically considered for contribution so you must complete the relevant parts of the form

5 Academic Career Tracks
There are three career tracks to reflect the different balance of activities undertaken by colleagues at the University: Teaching and Research – career progression (through Lecturer – SL-Reader – Chair) Research – those seeking career progression predominantly through Research (RF – Senior RF – Reader – Chair) Teaching and Scholarship – those seeking career progression predominantly via teaching –(Lecturer-Scholarship, Senior Lecturer - Scholarship– Chair)

The application process Speak to your Line Manager / HR Partner / Trade Union Representative. We are here to give you guidance and feedback on your application BEFORE the February deadline. Documentation required: Refer to the National Academic Role Profiles Updated Job Description (located within the Application Form) Personal Statement Referees (for Grades 8/9) Updated CV using the standard format Stick to the word limits in the application form and CV

The Committee is looking for key evidence of the following: Research grants Conferences attended Presentations Publications (helpful to include details for example author, co-author, contributor, impact) Membership of professional bodies Teaching activity Supervision activity Public engagement and outreach activities Contribution to promoting equality and diversity

The application process Speak to your Line Manager / HR Partner / Trade Union Representative. We are here to give you guidance and feedback on your application BEFORE the February deadline. Documentation required: Update your Job Description (this is located within the Application Form) HERA criteria / 14 elements / numerical scoring process Include a Personal Statement State your Referees (for Grades 8/9) Include an updated CV Include an organisational chart Stick to the word limits in the application form and CV

Two Role Analysts will score your application Your application is reviewed by your College or Professional Services Committee References will be sought for Grades 8/9 – four external references are required for Grade 9 You will receive feedback following the main Promotions Committee in June If you are successful your new pay award will be effective from 1 August 2017 If you are unsuccessful you will be encouraged to meet with your Head of School/Head of College or Head of Section

12 What if I am unhappy with the outcome?
All unsuccessful applicants for promotion have the right of appeal on procedural grounds.
