Italics, “Quotation Marks”, and Ellipses… English 10B – Mrs. Krabill – Chapter 24 Italics, “Quotation Marks”, and Ellipses…

Italics If you are hand-writing a paper, italics will be underlined instead.

Italics Use italics for titles and subtitles of Books Plays Long poems (Divided into titled/numbered sections) Periodicals Works of art Movies TV series Long musical works and recordings

Italics Names of Words, letters, symbols, and numerals, foreign words Ships Trains Aircraft Spacecraft Words, letters, symbols, and numerals, foreign words Note: some foreign words have become part of the English language…look up the word in a recent dictionary to check!

“Quotation Marks” Use quotation marks to bracket a direct quotation: a person’s exact words. Mrs. Krabill said, “Boy I’m sore after my MMA fight against Mrs. Anderson.” Mrs. Anderson said that Mrs. Swope kicked her butt in their MMA fight. Directly quoted material begins with a capital letter. Mrs. Krabill asked her students, “Do any of you want to take me on in my next fight?” A bold student answered, “On Friday, right?”

“Quotation Marks” If a quoted statement is interrupted, the second part of the quote begins with a lower-case letter. “Well, I suppose I would take you on,” said Mrs. Krabill, “if you really feel like losing.” A direct quotation can be set off from the rest of the sentence by a comma, question mark, or exclamation point, but NOT by a PERIOD. “I’ll take that chance!” the bold student exclaimed while being cheered by the rest of the class.

Annoying “Quotation Mark” rules Commas and periods are placed inside the closing quotation mark. Colons and semicolons are placed outside the closing quotation mark. Question marks and exclamation points are Placed inside the quotation mark if the quotation itself is a question or exclamation. Placed outside the quotation mark if the sentence as a whole is a question or exclamation. Did Martin Luther King, Jr., say, “I have a dream”?

A few more annoying “” Rules When writing dialogue, begin a new paragraph every time the speaker changes. If a quoted passage is several paragraphs long, put quotation marks at the beginning of each paragraph, but only at the end of the last paragraph. Use quotation marks to enclose titles of short stories, poems, essays, articles, songs, TV episodes, and chapters of books. Use single quotes to mark a quotation within a quotation. Use quotation marks to bracket slang and technical terms.

Ellipses… When pausing in spoken dialogue When omitting quoted material Words from the beginning (keep previous sentence punctuation) Words from the end Words from the middle Whole sentences from the middle Be sure to include a space before and after!!
