KEY CONCEPT DNA fingerprints identify people at the molecular level.

Based on: Noncoding regions of DNA Number of nucleotide repeats in particular parts of the genome A person’s molecular identity A type of restriction map using gel electrophoresis

A DNA fingerprint is a type of restriction map. Draw the bands for person B.

DNA fingerprinting & probability: Used for identification By investigating several parts of the genome, it’s very unlikely that two people would randomly share identical numbers of repeats (multiplying each separate probability of a match) (mother) (child 1) (child 2) (father)

Several regions of DNA are used to make DNA fingerprints. Individual probabilities are multiplied to find the overall probability of two DNA fingerprints randomly matching. 1 1 1 1 500 90 120 5,400,000 1 chance in 5.4 million people x = Several regions of DNA are used to make DNA fingerprints. By investigating several parts of the genome, it is very unlikely that two people would randomly share identical numbers of repeats (multiplying each separate probability to find the total probability of a match)

Uses of DNA fingerprinting: evidence in criminal cases paternity tests immigration requests studying biodiversity Identifying new species tracking genetically modified crops
