Sometimes the message is clear and sometimes it is more subtle, buried and disguised. Some of these are powerful when put together. In “Listening to Learn” we discussed that you pay attention to both the words of the message and more importantly how it is said. >Body language, Tone of voice, Emotions….< Effective Communication provides what listeners need in a manner that engages their minds. The sender must listen to the signals being sent out. In other words…Communication is a 2-way process. Both LISTENER AND SENDER have responsibilities. Uncomfortable? If something’s not working, let’s try to make it better “If it doesn’t’ seem to be working well, let me know. “I want this presentation to be a success”

Communication must be 2-way (figure out what they want-so you can give them what they need). We think we know what’s best and just forge ahead. A speaker may not actually verbalize the thought, but…they are more likely to adjust a presentation to fit the need We want… How much more unusual is it for kids to hear it? What do you want – unusual for adults to hear to understand something to learn a skill Knowledge

Barriers to Effective Communication D CousinoTG Notes SR917 Barriers to Effective Communication Lack of common ground Lack of sincerity Lack of authority Telemarketers – Love them, right? Why don’t we love them? What are the barriers to effective communication that a telemarketer must overcome?   Lack of Common Ground. The telemarketer knows nothing about us and is aware of no shared interest except that we have a telephone and we probably have a credit card. Lack of Sincerity. Making “the deal” is their only concern. Do they ever ask how we might use their product? Or if we need it? Do they listen? Lack of authority. Usually can’t answer questions beyond the script and FAQs. Hired only to make the deal via the call. Transition: What other barriers can you think of?

Exaggerate, blur the truth, never mention weaknesses . Presentation skills. Can badger, argue or sound bored. Don’t let a word in edgewise.  Receptiveness. Our needs don’t seem to matter….”are you going to buy or not?”  Environment. They disrupt our personal or family time, often calling during the dinner hour. This intrusion into the home environment generally makes people less receptive to their message than if they were to receive that same message in the mail, for example.   And yet even with all these drawbacks, telemarketing is successful often enough for many companies to invest millions of dollars in it. Just think how powerful communication can be when people take the time to overcome these barriers. Transition: So, how can ensure we embrace good principles and avoid barriers to effective communication?

Clarity. Be simple and straightforward. Plan your message, not just your PPT!   Authority. A speaker should know what he is talking about or be willing to learn with the group. Be willing to be vulnerable Sincerity. A speaker must care about the message and the receiver. Common Ground. Who Me game – got to learn something about each other. Common experiences make communication easier. A Scout leader who knows nothing about constellations can bring a star chart along on a campout. He might say, “I’ve never used one of these before, but I’d sure like to learn. Let’s figure this out together.”

What are some good skills you’ve seen? What are some bad methods you’ve experienced? (e.g. Nervous habits, speak too quickly, no eye contact). The key is to plan and rehearse.   Receptiveness. Read your audience. Can you tell if it’s working or not? Be willing to take feedback and adjust. (are they hungry, tired, bored, restless, right after lunch, ahhhh!!!!) Environment. What are things to watch for in the setting? (e.g. Temperature, distractions, lighting, seating arrangements etc.) Transition: How do good communication skills apply to teaching?

Most have been called upon to teach something as a scout leader, right?   Transition: Let’s talk about the Woggle-tying process!
