Randolph’s Early Life Asa Philip Randolph was born April 15, 1889 in Crescent City, Florida He was the second son of the Rev. James William Randolph, a tailor and minister in an African Methodist Episcopal Church and Elizabeth Robinson Randolph, a skilled seamstress. In 1891, the Randolph family moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where Asa would live for most of his youth. He than attended the Cookman Institute which was one of the first institutions of higher education for blacks in the country. He learned from his father that color was less important than a person’s character and conduct. From his mother, he learned the importance of education and of defending oneself physically against those who would seek to hurt one or one’s family, if necessary.

Who is Asa Philip Randolph He was born April 15, 1889 in Crescent City, Florida He died May 16,1979 in New York City He was a leader in the the Civil Rights Movement, the American labor movement, and socialist political parties. In 1925, he organized and led the Brotherhood of sleeping car porters, the first predominantly African-American labor

Labor Organizer -In 1912, Randolph made one of his earliest significant political moves when he founded an employment agency called the Brotherhood of Labor with Charles Owen, who was a Columbia University law student who shared Randolph’s socialist political views.

March on Washington The March on Washington was organized by Asa P. Randolph, John Lewis, Martin Luther King Jr., Roy Wilkins from NAACP, and James Farmer from CORE’S. It was organized because Randolph believed in equality for blacks and Washington still believed in segregation. The march was for Jobs and Freedom.
