Skill: WE DO Read the Text Circle the name of the Pillar (Arabic and English) Underline what Muslims are required to do Transfer information to Five Pillars worksheet Illustrate Pillar (Salah) Daily Prayer The second pillar of Islam (Salah) is daily prayer. Muslims must pray five times a day: before sunrise, at midday, in late afternoon, right after sunset, and before going to bed. At each of these times, a call goes out from a mosque, inviting Muslims to come pray. Muslims try to pray together at a mosque. They believe prayer is proof that someone has accepted Allah. When Muslims pray they first wash themselves and then face towards the Kaaba in Mecca. Most mosques have prayer mats on which worshipers will kneel when they pray.

Muslims must pay part of their wealth, usually 2.5%, to a religious official. This money is used to help the poor, build mosques and hospitals, or pay debts. Helping and caring for others is important in Islam. In some Muslim cultures Zakah can also be given through doing good deeds like helping people or caring for their environment. The Qur’an teaches that Allah will not listen to the prayers of those who do not give Zakah.
