Making the Muslim profession of faith: “There is no other God but God and Muhammad is his prophet” Must be recited in Arabic. Prayer Performing ritual prayers five times a day facing Mecca. Charity (Alms) Giving money to help the poor and needy. Fasting Fasting during the holy month of Ramadan. Sunrise to sunset. Pilgrimage (Hajj) Pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca once during lifetime if able.

5 Qur’an The word of God A record of the revelations to Muhammad over a period of 22 years Began in a cave outside Mecca in AD 610 Continued for the rest of his life until he died in AD 632 The Qur’an was compiled as a book in AD 651 , 19 years after Muhammad’s death

6 Qur’an continued…. Consists of 114 chapters made up of verses.
Verses discusses: Nature of God Creation The human soul Moral, legal, and family issues. Much of the language is very poetic.

7 The Sunnah Traditions of the prophet; the words and actions of Muhammad. Guidelines for living a proper life. Helps interpret parts of the Qur’an. (like a commentary) The written version of the Sunnah is called the Hadith. Example passage (DON’T COPY): “ The one who eats his fill while his neighbor goes without food is not a believer. God does not look upon your bodies and appearances. He looks upon your hearts and your deeds.”
