5 Pillars Shahadah Salah Zakah Sawm Hajj

5 Pillars of Islam The five pillars do not physically exist anywhere. They are the duties that every believer must fulfil. They help Muslims to put their faith into action. Carrying out the five pillars demonstrates that every believer is putting their faith first in their lives.

5 Pillars Shahadah- Belief in one God and Muhammad is his prophet
Salah- Prayer 5 times a day Zakah- Almsgiving (donation of money) 2.5% of surplus income. Sawm- Fasting during Ramadan Hajj- Pilgrimage to Makkah

Shahadah The first pillar is the Shahadah. This sums up the Muslim belief: “I witness that there is no other God but Allah, and Muhammad is the prophet of Allah.”

Salah The second pillar is called Salah. This is the belief that Muslims should pray 5 times a day. They can pray anywhere that is clean but they always face towards the ka’bah which is in Makkah.

Zakah The third pillar is called Zakah, which means purity. Most Muslims believe that giving money to charity purifies the heart from greed and selfishness so they give 2.5 % of their surplus income to charity.

Sawm The fourth pillar of Islam is sawm. Muslims believe that during Ramadan, the ninth month of their calendar, Muslims over the age of twelve are expected to fast. This means that they cannot eat or drink anything from sunrise to sunset. If they are ill, too old or pregnant then they will not be expected to do this.

The Hajj The fifth pillar is Hajj It is the duty of every Muslim to go on a pilgrimage to Makkah at least once in their lifetime.

Classwork/Homework Fill in the blanks on the sheet provided.
Draw the 5 pillars of Islam and why are they important? Why do you think they are called the “pillars of Islam.” Do you think they would be easy to keep? Explain why, with examples. Why do you think Muslims are required to pray 5 times a day? Why do you think the pilgrimage is to Makkah?
