Studying the Web of Life
There are levels of organization in an ecosystem:
Movement of Energy Through an Ecosystem: Producers and Consumers PRODUCERS (autotrophs) –plants, bacteria and algae are the first to capture the energy.
Intro to BIOLOGY Bio= Life Logy= Study of. What are the characteristics of living things?
Digging A Little Deeper Into Ecosystems. Organisms of Ecosystems Producers Consumers Herbivores Carnivores Omnivores Decomposers.
ECOLOGY The Study of the Interaction of organisms with their environment.
Competition – two species share a requirement for a limited resource  reduces fitness of one or both species.
Modes of Nutrition Autotrophs have the ability to make their own food by the process of photosynthesis (write the word equation) Some bacteria use chemosynthesis.

Presentation transcript:

Living systems

Ecosystem A community of Biotic and Abotic Factors that are linked together.

Niche A habitat supplying the necessary factors for existence.

Producer (Autotroph) Gets energy from the sun and makes food through Photosynthesis. Ex: Plants and trees

Consumer (Heterotroph) An organism that generally obtains food by feeding on another organism Cannot make own food, Must Consume! Ex: All Animals

Decomposer Gets energy from eating dead plants and animals. Ex: fungi and bacteria

Predator An animal that naturally preys on other animals Ex: Wolf eats the rabbit

Prey An animal that is hunted and killed by another for food Ex: Rabbit eaten by Wolf

Parasite An organism that lives in or on another organism and benefits by deriving Nutrients at the expense of the host Must live off host to survive (harmful) Ex: tick on a deer

Host The organism that supports the parasite An animal or plant that a parasite lives on or in The organism that supports the parasite Ex: Dog supports the heartworm parasite

Biotic Living organisms Ex: All plants and animals

Abiotic NOT Living Ex: Wind, water, sunlight, rock and minerals

Abiotic Factors
