Why does Ice melt slower in Coca-Cola than Diet-Soda? The Ice-Cube Dilemma Why does Ice melt slower in Coca-Cola than Diet-Soda?

Start: Observations 2x250 mL beaker 100 mL measuring cylinder 2 ice cubes (small size) 100 mL Coke 100 mL diet Coke Time how long it takes for the ice to melt in each beaker

Hmm what is in Coke® Anyway? Tiny amount of salt 10 tsp of sugar No sugar

Is the difference because of sugar in the water? 2x250 mL beaker 100 mL measuring cylinder 2 ice cubes (small size) 100 mL DI water in one beaker 100 mL DI water with 25 mL sugar in the other beaker Time how long it takes for the ice to melt in each beaker

What is melting? Hot, fast moving, water molecules collide with cold ice The hot water molecule gives energy to the ice and becomes cooler and now is moving much slower The energy given to the ice gives the molecules at the surface of the ice enough energy to break free The faster you can get the hot water in, and the cold water away the fast the ice will melt

Glucose in water Glucose is 10x heavier than water and moves more slowly Water sticks to the glucose The water-glucose units move very slowly and the water molecules that are not stuck to the glucose must move around the water-glucose units We say glucose in water is more viscous than pure water Glucose with water in it is heavier per mL than water – it is more dense

How will the heavier glucose affect melting? http://chem.aellumis.org/chem-v20l/

How can we prove this hypothesis? What if we could help the glucose to move faster? What if we stirred the water/ice solution and stirred the glucose/water/ice solutions?
