Objective 1.1 Purposes of government What are the basic purposes of government?

There are 3 main purposes of government

The first is to provide public goods and services.

The government pays to create and runs institutions that citizens would not be able to afford to create or run themselves.

The government pays for these goods and services with tax revenue (money) collected from citizens

Example: fire department

Example: education (public schools)

Example: health agencies (free clinic)

Example: roads and highways

Example: trash pickup

The 2nd purpose of government is to keep order

The government makes laws to protect the rights of its citizens. Making laws helps to prevent conflicts and keeps order in society.

KEEP ORDER The government keeps order… …..by providing courts to settle arguments based on the laws

help enforce the laws and to keep order. Punishments are created to help enforce the laws and to keep order. Examples: Jail, Fines, loss of privileges

The 3rd purpose of government is to protect its citizens.

The military protects a government’s borders and protects citizens from threats abroad Examples: Navy Army Marines Coast Guard National Guard

Law enforcement officers help to enforce the laws and settle conflicts at home. Examples: Police, FBI, DEA
