2 National Agencies Central Intelligence Agency CIA- gathers and analyzes information from foreign countries to protect against external threats (ex. outside the USA) Federal Bureau of Investigation FBI- investigates federal crimes, gathers and analyzes information about internal threats (ex. inside the USA) National Security Agency NSA- collects and decodes outside and internal threats and uses surveillance on targeted individuals (ex. bugging, videotaping, going through computers/ s) Transportation Security Administration TSA- provides security for those traveling in the USA (ex. airport screenings)

3 National Agencies Immigration and Customs Enforcement ICE- investigates weaknesses of national borders and deportations (ex. removing illegal aliens) Federal Emergency Management Agency FEMA- coordinate responses to disasters in the US (ex. sending after a natural disaster) Drug Enforcement Administration DEA- coordinates and combats drug smuggling outside and inside the US (ex. enforces drug raids) Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearm and Explosives ATF- investigates the unlawful use of firearms and explosives as well as illegal sale of alcohol and tobacco (ex. confiscates illegal guns)

4 National Agencies Internal Revenue Service IRS- enforces and collects taxes (ex. citizens pay federal income taxes every year) Food and Drug Administration FDA- regulates and supervises food safety, tobacco, dietary supplements/vitamins, over the counter and prescription medication (ex. new medication must be approved before doctors can prescribe it) Center for Disease Control CDC- protects public health and safety through the control and prevention of disease and injury (ex. urges Americans to get yearly flu vaccines) Environmental Protection Agency EPA- enforces regulation to protect the environment (ex. amount of pollution a factory can make)

5 State Agencies State Bureau of Investigation SBI- assists federal and local law enforcement with crimes, gathers and analyzes information about internal threats (ex. inside NC) State Highway Patrol SHP- primary statewide law enforcement agency (ex. has jurisdiction all over the state- in cities, counties, etc.) Department of Transportation DOT- builds, repairs and operates state roadways (ex. repairs bridges on the interstate) Division of Public Health DPH- guides the public and enforces health regulations in businesses (ex. inspects all NC restaurants)

6 Local Agencies Sheriff’s Office SO- primary law enforcement for a county (ex. has jurisdiction over the entire county, responsible for parts of a county not in a municipality) Police Department PD- primary law enforcement for a municipality (ex. has jurisdiction inside the municipality limits) Emergency Medical Services EMS- provides medical assistance to people in the area (ex. sends ambulances to people in need)
