Local governments make laws to protect citizens.
It provides services such as schools, libraries, and picking up the trash.
Local governments collect taxes to pay for services.
It selects leaders through elections.

4. Mayor The mayor is elected by the citizens of the community.
He/she is the leader of the community government.
They work with the city council and county commission to make laws.

5. City Council The city council makes and pass laws in the community.
They try and improve the city by holding town meetings.
Most city councils have five to nine members.
Must be 18 years old to be a member.

6. County Commission County commissioners run the county government.
Decide things like the speed limit and what roads need to be repaired.
They provide courts and provide fire and police protection.
