2 What is an agency? An administrative unit of government that can create regulations and enforce laws Agencies are usually a part of a larger executive department Many will work together to achieve tasks

3 Important Issues Agencies tackle the task of dealing with many important issues Some of the most important are Crime control National security Transportation Health

4 Crime Control Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
Enforces federal laws and investigates crimes Part of the Dept. of Justice Yearly Budget - $6.8 billion Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Combats drug smuggling and use in the U.S. Works with the FBI Yearly Budget - $2.4 billion

5 Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF)
Investigates unlawful possession of firearms and illegal trafficking of alcohol and tobacco Part of the Dept. of Justice Yearly Budget - $1 billion

6 National Security Department of Homeland Security
Duty is to protect U.S. from attacks and respond to natural disasters Focuses on terrorism Includes the following agencies (to name a few) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Citizenship and Immigration Services Transportation Security Administration Secret Service Yearly Budget - $52 billion Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Responsible for obtaining info about foreign governments and individuals Is an independent agency (not with a dept.) Yearly Budget – Classified (said to be about $45 billion)

7 Transportation Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
Oversees all non-military aviation in the U.S. Part of the Dept. of Transportation (DOT) Yearly Budget - $16 billion National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Investigates and reports on special accidents (plane, train, highway, marine) Independent agency (not w/ a dept.) Yearly budget - $76 million

8 Health Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
Provides info to enhance health decisions, works with the states, and conducts research to develop vaccines and cures Part of the Dept. of Health and Human Services Yearly Budget - $9 billion Medicare Offers health insurance to people 65+ ($440 billion a year) Medicaid Offers health benefits to low income families and the disabled ($204 billion a year)

9 Where does the money come from?
Taxes pay for all the government’s programs, agencies, and departments The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is the agency responsible for collecting all taxes The IRS is part of the Dept. of Treasury

10 How do we know how many people we need to service?
The U.S. census is given every 10 years This is a comprehensive survey to gather statistics about the current population on Age Income Race Occupation Education Level Etc.
