Early US Foreign Policy When? What Policies? Impacts on US?

Washington’s Farewell Address Given by Pres Washington when he is leaving office Suggested that Presidents should only serve 2 terms Wanted to keep isolated from foreign ties & conflicts Warned against too much political division Wanted to protect the country from having too much debt

Why? Keep from joining sides in European wars Did not want to get dragged into war STILL TOO WEAK TO PROTECT OURSELVES!!!

Monroe Doctrine Issued by Pres. James Monroe US would not interfere with European affairs US would not interfere with existing European colonies in western hemisphere

more Monroe Doctrine NO MORE FUTURE COLONIZATION ALLOWED IN WESTERN HEMISPHERE Any attempt to colonize == considered attack on US

Result Could not enforce early on >>> US was too weak Used later to interfere with Latin American countries
