1. The Election of 1816 saw the last of the Federalists
The Election of 1816 saw the last of the Federalists. James Monroe, a Democratic-Republican won office, and he would serve as president for 8 years. Monroe’s presidency was often termed the “Era of Good Feelings” for two reasons. First, the war had ended in Europe, and secondly, the Democratic-Republicans were the only political party around. Monroe served as president for two terms.

7. The Monroe Doctrine
The Monroe Doctrine was issued by president Monroe after several revolutions occurred in South America. The people of Mexico and all of Central America gained independence from their colonizer - Spain. The newness of the countries made them very weak. Spain soon sought to regain control of their former colonies.
Monroe decided to issue a warning to the countries of Europe. He told them if they tried to recolonize Latin America, the U.S. would consider it a threat to the United States also. He also promised that the United States would not try to get involved in Europe.
Really, the United States had no way to actually enforce the Monroe Doctrine. Luckily for the United States, England agreed to the proposal. As a result, Spain never attempted to re-invade the colonies they had lost in the Americas.
