2 Monroe Doctrine: In the early 1800’s, Spain was having difficulty. Many of their colonies in the Americas had declared ______, many led by Revolutionary fighter Simon _____ (called the Liberator). America supported the struggles of the rebels. After Mexico broke away from ____ in 1821, President Monroe became concerned that rival European powers might intervene and try to take control of these countries, so he and Secretary of State John Quincy-Adams put together a document that protected _____interests. The Monroe Doctrine was an exclusive statement of American policy warning European nations not to _____with the Americas, and that any attempt to do so would be considered a hostile act against our country.

3 The Monroe doctrine: The Monroe Doctrine had four basic points: 1. The US would not interfere in the affairs of ______ nations. 2. The US would recognize, and not interfere with, European colonies that _____existed in North and South America. 3. The Western Hemisphere was to be off-limits to future _____ by any foreign power. 4.
