Presentation transcript:

Canto 33 This Canto takes place in the Ninth Circle and Third Division of hell, before Dante is to meet Satan himself. He comes across a few characters that are punished for their sins much differently then the sinners in the higher circles of hell.

Characters Count Ugolino della Gherardesca: Guelph leader who was imprisoned for treason. Archbishop Ruggieri degli Ubaldini: Imprisoned Count Ugolino and a traitor himself. Friar Alberigo: Shade in Ptolomaea, where traitors to their guests must stay. Ser Branca d’ Oria: Shade in Ptolomae in hell for murder.

The first soul Dante comes in contact with is a shade named Count Ugolino. He is eating Ruggieri the Archbishop whom he trusted in and who eventually imprisoned him in the Tower of Famine for treason. Ugolino also tells Dante of how he watched his sons and grandson starve to death, and how he ate them out of hunger.

The next two souls Dante comes in contact with are Friar Alberigo and Ser Branca d’ Oria. These two souls are shades because they are not dead yet. The severity of their sins forced their souls into hell before they were dead, while their bodies on Earth are being controlled by Demons.

Illustration of Hell In this diagram we are able to see where Dante and Virgil stand in hell. The last circle before the icon of Satan.
