3. Minos Upon entering the Second Circle, Virgil and Dante meet Minos. He is the judge of punishment. The sinners confess to him and however many times his tail wraps around them is the level in which they will spend eternity.

4. The Second Circle Dante and Virgil travel to the Second Circle, where the lustful are punished for their sins of flesh. These sinners are forever punished by violent storms.

5. Francesca and Paolo In this circle, Dante meets Francesca da Rimini and her brother-in-law Paolo Malatesta. Francesca tells Dante of her and Paolo’s love story.

6. Francesca was married to Paolo’s brother, Gianciotto. The two in-laws fell in love while reading about Lancelot. Their relationship grew and continued until they were found out by her husband. Gianciotto had the lovers killed for their behavior. As punishment for their sin, Francesca and Paolo are forced to be together forever.
