1 Dante’s The Inferno Canto VIII

2 Characters Filippo Adimari- nobleman from Florence.
Phlegyas- personification of anger and fury. His job is to bring the damned across the river Styx. Demons at the wall of Dis- those Demons who were once good, but fell at the persuasion of the Devil. Dante and Virgil coming upon the souls

3 Circle 5 explained Circle 5 is the where the wrathful and the sullen are punished for all eternity. The souls of the wrathful are trapped within a river of slime and mud, violently attacking one another. The souls of the sullen, are beneath the surface because in life they shut out the sun and others.

4 Summary Starts off in Circle 5, which is resting place of those were wrathful and sullen. Dante and Virgil come upon Phelgyas, and his boat that he uses to carry the damned across the river Styx. Filippo being push back into the water by Virgil

5 Summary Dante came upon Filippo Argenti while in this circle, finding him in the muddy waters. Filippo approaches Dante by using the name “the one who weeps.” He was then pushed back, by Virgil, into the muddy waters. Dante then was blessed by Virgil to cleanse him. Filippo pleading to talk to Dante

6 Dante and Virgil then come upon the city of Dis and the Tower to the city
The tower stands as a signaling point for the boatman. As Dante and Virgil near the tower a flame emits from the top. Another signal from the other side of the River flashes which is used for Phlegyas.
