The Giver Week 2 7th Grade Mrs. Huff

Journal Entry In Jonas’s community the Committee of Elders is responsible for choosing a career for each twelve. Discuss the pros and cons of having someone choose your career for you. Include at least one negative and one positive aspect.

Read Chapter 3 and Take Notes What physical appearance do Jonas and Gabe have that is different from anyone else in the community? Why does Lily’s mother try to dissuade her from her career choice? What item does Jonas perceive to change as he and Asher are playing with it? What is the official reason for “public announcements”?

Summarize for $1 Pretend you have $1.00 with which to purchase words to write a summary. Each word costs 5 cents which means you may use no more than 20 words.

Community Life Schedule Fill in any milestones in the appropriate age column that you may have read about today. Add any American milestones that you may have missed.

Celebration of Life Timeline Work with your group to create a “Celebration of Life” timeline for children in America. Each group will turn in one paper. Many celebrations occur before babies are one year old and include: actual birth, first tooth, first steps, first words, etc. Use the bottom of your “Community Life Schedule” handout for ideas.

Read Chapter 4 and Take Notes What is a “Rehabilitation Director”? Why might there be a rule against bragging? People cannot talk about their success. Do you agree or disagree with this? What is the rumor among the Elevens about completing volunteer hours? Why might the Old need assistance? What is the main ceremony at the release of the Old?

Summarize 3x3 Summarize the chapter using 3 sentences of 3 words each. Examples: The apple changes. Jonas is Receiver. You can’t brag.

Compare and Contrast Create a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast life in Jonas’s community to in America. Develop a thesis statement which will be used for an essay.

Thesis Statement Think of a thesis statement as a roadmap for your paper. It should be one sentence and appear as the last sentence of your introductory paragraph. You will be explaining the differences and similarities of life in Jonas’s community to life in America.

Read Chapter 5 and Take Notes Is it normal for people Jonas’s age to have “stirrings”? How are “stirrings” treated? Who else that Jonas knows seems to have “stirrings”? Do you agree with Jonas’s thought: “Always better, less rude, to talk about things that were the same”? What does treatment of the “stirrings” do? How long does the treatment go on?

Summarize 3x3 Summarize the chapter using 3 sentences of 3 words each. Examples: The apple changes. Jonas is Receiver. You can’t brag.

Class Discussion Why do you think Jonas’s community is required to take medication when begin to experience the stirrings?

Possible Answers The sharing of dreams helps parents monitor their children’s development. Marriages are not based on love; Elders match men and women based on compatibility. The community makes every effort to eliminate emotions. The birthmothers are the only ones allowed to have babies.

Share Your Thesis Statement Yesterday you had to come up with a thesis statement in which you compare and contrast Jonas’s community life events to life events celebrated in America. Does anyone need help developing a thesis statement?

Don’t Forget! Test on Chapters 1-5 tomorrow. Compare and Contrast essay is due Friday. You will have time to work on it after your test.
