PARENTING

Styles of Parenting There are three different styles of parenting. However, it is important to know that parents do not always fit into one of the three categories. There is often overlap in parenting styles and a blending of the three categories. Parenting styles develop as a result of many factors: the way they were parented; advice taken from books, courses, friends; and perceived needs, wants, and responsibilities.

Authoritarian Parenting: A method of parenting in which parents exercise complete control over their children Rules are strict Child’s input is not considered Physical punishment often imposed Child remains dependent on authority and may become rebellious.

Permissive Parenting: A method of parenting in which parents are inconsistent and unpredictable in discipline and make few demands on the children. Parent does what the child wants Parent needs are not considered Parents threaten love withdrawal as discipline method Child develops a need for approval and fears rejection

Democratic Parenting: A method of parenting in which discipline and rules are negotiated between parents and children. Parents set limits Child is given choices and accepts consequences Self-discipline is encouraged but choices are monitored by parents Child develops a strong sense of self-worth and understands and values appropriate behaviour

Parents as Friends The ideal friendship between parents and adolescents is different in character than a friendship between peers. Within peer friendships there is an element of equality whereas a friendship between a parent and adolescent must still include recognition that the parent has the responsibility of authority.

Strong friendships between parents and adolescents serve many important functions: Leisure Time: Families who are friends are able to enjoy many activities together which can strengthen the relationship. Identification: Strong relationships with parents allow an adolescent to choose their parent as a role model, therefore passing on certain qualities, strengths, values, and beliefs. Supervision, Discipline, & Guidance: Parents must allow an adolescent enough independence to develop trustworthiness and self-discipline but with open communication, the hope is that an adolescent will still confide in a parent and seek guidance on important life issues.
