Publications on Maternal Mortality The first report on Maternal Morality in India (1997-2003)-Trends, Causes and Risk Factors released in October, 2006. The special bulletin on Maternal Mortality in India (2004-2006) released in 2009. The special bulletin on Maternal Mortality in India (2007-2009) released in 2011. This special bulletin is the third in the series of Maternal Mortality.

Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) Refers to the number of women who die as a result of complications of pregnancy or childbearing in a given year per 100,000 live births in that year. Maternal Mortality Rate Maternal Mortality Rate is defined as the number of maternal deaths to women in the ages 15-49 per lakh of women in that age group. Life time Risk Life time risk is defined as the probability that, one women of reproductive age (15-49) will die due to child birth or puerperium assuming that chance of death is uniformly distributed across the entire reproductive span.  

MMR estimates 2010-12: Highlights Results are given at all India and for Major states. Decline in MMR estimates in 2010-12 over 2007-09: For India: 178 from 212 (a fall of about 16 %) In Empowered Action Group (EAG) states & Assam: 257 from 308 (16 %) Among Southern States: 105 from 127 (17 %) In Other States: 127 from 149 (15 %)

Maternal Mortality Ratio during, 2007-09 & 2010-12: Best & Worst States   2007-09 2010-12 Minimum Maximum EAG AND ASSAM Odisha 258 Assam 390 Bihar 219 328 SOUTHERN Kerala 81 Karnataka 178 66 144 OTHERS Maharashtra 104 Punjab 172 87 155 Assam remains at the bottom whereas Kerala at the top.
