Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl

Jewish Holidays Hanukkah is an eight-night celebration. Each night a candle is lit, which commemorates the miracle of the triumph of the Maccabees over the Greeks.

Jewish Holidays The Jewish Passover (Pesach) celebrates the freedom of the Hebrews from slavery in ancient Egypt. There are many foods and rituals and every food and ritual in the Jewish Passover has multiple symbolic meanings.

He was the leader of the Nazi Party. Who was Adolph Hitler? Adolf Hitler, a charismatic, Austrian-born demagogue, rose to power in Germany during the 1920s and early 1930s at a time of social, political, and economic upheaval. Failing to take power by force in 1923, he eventually won power by democratic means. He was the leader of the Nazi Party.

Adolph Hitler Once in power, he eliminated all opposition and launched an ambitious program of world domination and elimination of the Jews. He committed suicide in 1945.

Who are the Nazis? The Nazis grew out of a small right-wing party, The German’s Worker Party, which Hitler took over after 1919.  He developed a Twenty-Five Point Program based on hatred, and built up a paramilitary group (the SA) to defend his meetings and attack other parties.

What did the Nazis believe? National Socialism – loyalty to Germany, racial purity, equality and state control of the economy. Racism – the triumph of the Aryan race by armed force, because all races, especially the Jews, were inferior to the Aryan (pure German) ‘Master Race’. Lebensraum – to expand into Poland and Russia to get ‘Living Space’. Strong Government – complete obedience to the Führer (the leader, Hitler)

What were the major reasons for World War II? Unresolved issues and tension from World War I. The effects of the Great Depression 1939 invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany 1937 invasion of China by Japan 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor Hitler, and the Nazi Rule in Germany

The Allies: Fighting against Germany and Hitler USSR- Leader, Joseph Stalin USA- Leader, Franklin D. Roosevelt UK (England)- Leader, Winston Churchill

The Axis Countries Germany: Ruled by Hitler. Wanted to rule the world, take land, and spread Anti-Semitism (hatred towards Jews). Italy: Ruled by Benito Mussolini. Wanted to reclaim land they lost in WWI, and restore Rome’s Power. Japan: Ruled by Hirohito. Wanted to expand their empire.

Concentration Camps The camps were used for the purpose of torturing and exterminating complete races of people, that were unacceptable to the Nazi regime. There was little food in the camps, disease spread quickly, sanitation was poor, and the imprisoned had to obey or be killed.

Where were the concentration camps located? Auschwitz: Largest camp located in Poland. Over 2 million people died at this camp. Mass murder happened daily.

What was a Jewish Ghetto? After Germany conquered Poland, Jewish people were sent to segregated areas. These areas were surrounded by barbed wire, brick walls, with armed guards. People were not allowed to leave, and Jewish people had to wear a yellow Star of David affixed to their clothing.
