TIA’s Activities in the Areas of ICT and the Environment Document No: GSC17-PLEN-54 Source: TIA Contact: Cheryl Blum (cblum@tiaonline.org) Herb Congdon (hcongdon@tiaonline.org) GSC Session: Plenary Agenda Item: 6.6 TIA’s Activities in the Areas of ICT and the Environment Cheryl Blum, VP, Technology & Standards TIA
TIA’s Sustainability Initiative Work with member companies in their identification of, development of, promotion of, and positioning of green and sustainable initiatives. STEP has been identified as a mechanism to promote and position the initiatives and technologies of member companies.
Why STEP? Fills the ICT void not addressed by other “green building” rating systems ICT systems have been challenged to contribute to the sustainable building movement ICT systems are not (yet) part of the changing building codes and standards process Engage all stakeholders to accomplish sustainability goals
Accomplishments ANSI/TIA standard development in motion TR-42.10, STEP Subcommittee STEP Rating System\Guide demonstration documents www.thestepfoundation.org Core rating system has been validated Pilot projects have validated best practices
Current Projects Users’ manual & online education program Considering additional ICT categories & credits Ongoing Pilot Projects STEP for Manufacturers rating system Capture existing sustainability practices Encourage additional initiatives
Other TIA Related Activities TIA Standards TIA-942-A Supports energy efficiency for Data Centers TIA-4964 RAN energy savings management TSB-473 Green Revised Energy Efficient Network (GREEN) – Technology Initiatives Study for cdma2000 Wireless Networks TIA-222 (in progress) Supports small wind turbines
Proposed Resolution The GSC continues to provide general support in the efforts related to the development of an ICT standard for sustainability
