Poetry Literature that uses the sounds, rhythms, and meanings of words to describe the world.

Poetry Elements Lines - groups of words Stanzas - organized units of lines - work together to express one key idea

Poetry Elements Stanza Break - blank line - signals one stanza has ended a new stanza is beginning

Poetry Elements repeat at regular intervals - reminds readers and Refrain - a line or group of lines that repeat at regular intervals - reminds readers and listeners of a key idea, image, or event Variations - changing one or more words with each repetition

Sound Devices and unstressed syllables in words. Rhythm - a beat created by stressed and unstressed syllables in words. Meter - a pattern of rhythm. Feet - measures meter in poetry.

Each foot consists of one unstressed syllable followed by one stressed syllable. This down-up, down-up rhythmic pattern fits the subject of a boy swinging on the branches of trees.

Sound Devices consonant sounds at the ends of words. *Tin and Pin Rhyme - the repetition of vowel and consonant sounds at the ends of words. *Tin and Pin Rhyme Scheme - a particular pattern that rhymes follow.

Sound Device Alliteration - the repetition of consonant sounds in the beginnings of words.

Sound Device Onomatopoeia - the use of words that imitate sounds.
