First Nations What were the three First Nation groups present in Quebec when the Europeans arrived?   Which physiographic region/geographic area of Quebec did each group reside in?  How were the lifestyles of the Inuit and Algonquian different from that of the Iroquois? Why?    How is sedentarism and nomadism related to being patriarchal or matriarchal? Which of the First Nations in Quebec were patriarchal and which were matriarchal? What was the demographic effect of the arrival of the French on the First Nations of Quebec? Why did this occur? What cultural changes did the French incite in the First Nations’ culture and vice versa?

The French Period (1534-1763) Where (geographically) in Quebec did most of the French population settle? Why?  What system of land division did the French establish? Describe.  Why did the French territory rapidly expand during this period? How far did the French territory extend?  Who lived in the territory of Quebec PRIOR to Royal Government (1534-1663)?  How did the French population change after 1663? Give the years when each was founded. For what purpose was each settlement (mainly) founded?  What was the role of the missionaries in New France?

The British Period (1763-1867) How does the population of Quebec change after the War of the Conquest?  How does the Royal Proclamation negatively affect the French population?  What was the Underground Railway?  Which group of people immigrates to Quebec from the American colonies in the 1780s? Why?

The British Period (1763-1867) How does the above group cause a territorial change in the Province of Quebec? What group of British people starts coming to Quebec in droves starting around the mid-1800s? Why? Because of rapid industrialization/mechanization and shortage of land in Quebec starting in the 19th century, many people move out of rural areas. Some of these people move to urban areas in Quebec, and some of these people move outside of Quebec. Where else do these people move and why? How do the government of Lower Canada and the Catholic Church react to the above out-migration?

The Population of Canada (1867-present) What was the name of the law which created the country of Canada in 1867?   Our first prime minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, wanted to boost Canada’s economy and population at the end of the 19th century. How does he do this? What were the three main components of the National Policy? When and what was the Indian Act?

What were it’s three main components: The National Policy was introduced by the first prime minister, Sir John A. Macdonald in 1879. What were it’s three main components: Tariffs: To protect new Canadian made products in factories by applying a protective tariff. This meant higher custom duties for importing products from other countries if Canada already made that product. Immigration: To encourage more settlement of the land of Canada (especially western Canada). People were encouraged to come from other countries and live in Canada and contribute to the labour force. Railways: To link the provinces and promote trade between each other a railway would facilitate access to other Canadian provinces.

Clifford Sifton, our Minister of the Interior at the beginning of the 20th century wanted people to settle in which region of Canada? Why? How did World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II effect immigration to Canada? When were each of these three events?
