2 National Policy- 1879 (Canada now includes: Original 4, NWT, Manitoba, BC, PEI)
Canada was facing many problems during this time. John.A Macdonald created the National Policy to try and solve the problems Canada was facing.

3 Goals/Objectives of National Policy
1. Support for Canadian Industries: Tariff policy Increased custom duties on products imported from other countries.

2. To increase trade between the provinces: Huge investments in railway development.

3. To settle the land in Western Canada (past Ontario): Promote immigration to the West in order to create a large domestic market (customers)

1. Between 1871 and million immigrants came from the British Isles, Northern Europe and the United States

2. Tensions existed between the Irish and the French Canadians who were in constant competition for jobs in the labour market

8 Impact of National Policy on Population
3. French were the majority in Quebec, however British were the majority in the cities and areas such as the Easter Townships, Outaouais and Gaspesie
