Remembrance Poetry Competition Yr. 9 Jonathan Peel JLS 2016

Closing Date: Monday 21st November Please enter a poem for consideration in a competition to showcase your creative writing talent. Closing Date: Monday 21st November There will be a prize for the Winning Entry, judged by the English Department.   The best entries will be displayed in the department and in the Newsletter/The Standard. Jonathan Peel JLS 2016

Think: We have looked at several examples of poetic form. Do you want to try Sonnet, Ballad, Villanelle or free Verse? Consider the poem you prepared for your oral presentations. What elements of that poem stood out – how could you include them in your work? What do I do now? Jonathan Peel JLS 2016

PLANNING All poems have a narrative in some form – what is yours? Write a short summary of the contents of your poem. What message might you wish to get across? PLANNING Jonathan Peel JLS 2016

In “Millions of the Mouthless Dead” we read the instruction not to mourn the dead and turn them into heroes. In “Disabled” we read of a soldier, typifying many, who is left as an outcast by the nation for which he fought In “The General” we read of the hypocrisy and foolishness of the officer classes In “The Charge of the Light Brigade” we read of heroism on the part of the ordinary soldiers … Options Jonathan Peel JLS 2016

When you have done this… Choose a form and check that you understand the criteria. E.g. Sonnet: 14 lines, Octave and sestet, Iambic rhythm, regular rhyme scheme… Then look at your word banks: are there any clear and obvious rhymes ? What might you need to add to ensure that you can find rhymes? Might you use half rhymes? Might you deliberately break the pattern for effect? When you have done this… Jonathan Peel JLS 2016

My word list Tears, dignity, honour, weeping, soul, lonely, sad, home, mother, boy, girl, pain, shock, horror, grief, belief, wound, fool, breath, memorial, passing, marching, rows, pride, death, sullen, lost, epitaph, cenotaph… SONNET Jonathan Peel JLS 2016

I might look for interest here: Sullen Soul in… Tears is homonym – tears – which is which Plenty of assonance in the long O vowel sound Grief Belief Home and mother as potent images Breath Death Epitaph Cenotaph I might look for interest here: Jonathan Peel JLS 2016

“But I need to begin to draft…” “Be patient.” IDEA: A sonnet has a volta: mine could be the difference between public remembrance and the remembrance in the home. I wonder which is closer to the spirit of true remembrance? My poem will consider the veterans who march each year at the cenotaph and compare that act of Remembrance with the “reality” of an imagined mother receiving news of her son during an unspecified war… remembrance sunday video “But I need to begin to draft…” “Be patient.” Jonathan Peel JLS 2016

I will work on this with you Using a visualiser, I will work on the poem as you do. Try not to get distracted but take a look from time to time… I will add my effort to this slide-deck… I will work on this with you Jonathan Peel JLS 2016
