History of Cells

Robert Hooke A British scientist Build a microscope that allowed him to look at very tiny objects Sliced a very thin piece of cork and looked at it through his microscope

What did he see? He saw hundreds of little boxes or “honeycomb”. Named the boxes “CELLS” or “little rooms” in Latin.

Anton van Leeuwenhoek A fabric merchant Looked at pond scum. Discovered unicellular organisms. Named them“animacules” or “little animals”.

Theodor Schwann 1839 Matthias Schleiden 1838 A German scientist who studied cells. Concluded that all plant are made of cells Drawings of the first plant and animal cells discovered by Schleiden and Schwann. Theodor Schwann 1839 A German scientist that studied cells. Concluded that animals are made of cells

Rudolf Virchow 1858 German doctor Discovered that cells could not develop from anything but other cells.

Cell Theory 1. All organisms are composed of one or more cells. 2. The cell is the basic unit of structure and function in all living things. Example: skin and nerve cells 3. All cells come from existing cells

Cell Characteristics All cells have 2 characteristics 1. they are surrounded by a cell membrane 2. They contain DNA (at some point)
