Campbell’s Soup Can Andy Warhol and other Pop Artists borrowed popular-culture images from movies, TV shows, and advertising. He shocked the art world 50 years ago with his print 32 Campbell’s Soup Cans. When Warhol first created the print, Campbell’s was upset. Then the company decided it was a good advertisement. They even sent Warhol cases of tomato soup! Most recently in 2013, Campbell’s is selling Andy Warhol-inspired soup can at Target. The cans have colors like pink and green and Warhol quotes, such as “in the future, everybody will be world famous for 15 minutes.”

Marilyn Monroe The vibrant colors in Warhol’s silkscreen prints of Marilyn Monroe strike the viewer immediately, boldly announcing their importance. Monroe, a famous movie star, appears in bold colors – note the use of complementary colors. By using an unnatural color scheme as he has clearly done so on the right, Warhol draws the viewer’s attention to the colors themselves. He transforms a very recognizable face into a statement about the colors he chose to use. Warhol began his career in advertising and was an expert at communicating his ideas to the public. What idea do you think he is trying to share?
