Leveraging Data and Analytics to Optimize Welcome! Leveraging Data and Analytics to Optimize Your PM Strategy Chuck Patel, President CHAMPS Analytics cpatel@champsanalytics.com 404-457-1506

Preface….. This is a different type of Presentation Sometimes conferences, you here about theories and strategies that you can deploy Today – you will learn about what is actually being done to drive high impact performance

High Labor Costs + Many Regulations = Expensive Maintenance Business problems facing Reliability Engineers can be summed up in a simple formula: High Labor Costs + Many Regulations = Expensive Maintenance

How are we going to accomplish this? What is the solution? Two Word Answer: Data & Analytics

A common Business Challenge I am Starving for information.... But I am drowning in my own Data? How many of you feel this way?

Data is the new currency in business Inside your CMMS, Financials, all those Access Databases.... There are millions of $,$$$,$$$ of ideas to improve business that are trapped in that data

The Challenge is not insurmountable… But there are some hurdles…. Your Data is.... Big Complex Not very user friendly Controlled by IT / Security

A precursor to Value Based Maintenance What was the world like before VBM? Start up days .... There really was no PM program in place Surveillances were done Some equipment was replaced Plants weren’t run very well Not much consideration for costs....

What Happened when there was a failure on a critical piece of equipment? A PM Strategy was formulated Soon everyone started doing that PM As a result..... A huge PM program was created resulting in: Increasing Labor and Material Costs # of PMs increases

Fast Forward to the 90s…. PM Strategy evolved to be all about reliability at ANY cost Health and Safety of the public was first and foremost Failures were happening with non critical equipment/components Volume and velocity of the PMs were getting out of control

Today…. What is the goal? Deliver high level reliability at the lowest costs Reduce labor costs by shrinking the number of PMs & minizing touches Optimize and evaluate PMs (Challenge - why we are doing this PM?) Find the right balance between PM and CM work orders If done successfully – there is a huge impact the bottom line – WIN!

Examples Critical Relay Failure – 10,000, 1, 5 Years, failure rates? Does it matter? What PMs add value? How much energy do you want to consume? Looking at costs – eye wash stations @ Diablo Canyon Why not let some assets run to failure @ Palo Verde Reliability Engineers like to make efficient strategies that actually add value and maintain reliability

A little History… April 2016 of last year….. Our client Palo Verde / APS introduced us to EPRI and the Equipment Reliability Working Group (ERWG) and challenged us to solve some problems..... KPIs to focus on: Total PMs, Total Labor Costs, Total Material Costs, Frequency of Model Work Orders

In a perfect Blue Sky World… In a perfect Blue Sky World…. Let’s ask for the moon and see what we get… Let’s get all the PM data from each Utility and build a VBM tool: Allows for any user to quickly see all their Equipment and slice and dice the data by any possible criteria (AP 928 Codes, Crew, Facility, etc.) Easily identify the most expensive equipment types Review all the costs associated with those pieces of equipment Ask ANY question and get the answer instantly to make better decisions Communicate to the engineers at the plant Compare ourselves and our fleet against every other Unit in North America

We did it!.... In less than 1 year... Present Day We did it!.... In less than 1 year... Thanks to EPRI (Jeff Greene & Rick Way) for hosting the solution right down the road here in Charlotte, NC. We have over 95% participation of all utilities in the US and the Canadian fleet is coming on board shortly....

Present Day

What’s Next Leverage the existing infrastructure to deliver more value Outage Performance Analytics Materials / Inventory Analytics Online Work Management Performance Consolidated View – taking all the data from each Unit and allowing each utility to see where they rank when it comes to their own strategies for PMs

Question and Answer Session We are here to support you. How can we help? Thank you! Chuck Patel 404-457-1506 cpatel@champsanalytics.com
